As an absolute beginner who only took up golf when I retired last year I decided to join the local golf club. My father, who played off 6 well into his seventies, had tried to persuade me to take up the game, but as he pointed out, it is a different game in Scotland. Northumberland is very like Scotland in that friendly people play golf with no hint of the snobbishness often noticed in the Southern clubs.
The course is beautiful, but to me rather difficult, although I have at last managed to par each hole at one time or another. The first, unfortunately, is the hardest hole on the course - a long par 4, with a ditch and out of bounds for some 200 yards along the left of the fairway.
Other holes of note are the birdie-able 7th, 250 yards par 4 across a wide valley, and the 18th, where one has to aim for the coloured post as the green is not visible from the tee! This, however is not unusual in Allendale.
Despite the fact that one has to drive out of sight I have never had a ball stolen, the locals are more likely to give you a ball or two than take them.

Allendale golf course is on the side of a hill in beautiful countryside. The beautiful views complement the golf on view. Their is a lovely brand new club house on the side of the 9th green. As well as some difficult holes their is some that you want to keep playing again and again. I love this course. Its taxing but brilliant to play. But you must watch the wind as this has been many a pitfall for golfers. I advise you to play in the summer months as in winter some areas can get water-logged. It's a must for the golfers that enjoy a challenge as well has having fun.
