I lived in Alnmouth from 1967 until 1976 , between the ages of 11 and 20 years. The village course is one of the trickiest courses you could hope to find. In places the fairways are no more than 50 yards wide, flanked by a huge, bracken-covered hill on one side and the dunes and beach on the other. The blind uphill tee shot on the 6th is a challenge to even the low handicap players. Having negotiated the hill, the green perches on a table top with unforgiving slopes on both sides. The 7th, played from the top of Bracken Hill , is worth the climb. Th views across Alnmouth bay are spectacular! Beware the onshore wind though, it can blow your shot into the bracken to be lost forever.
Alnmouth Village Club dates back to 1867 and was originally 18 holes. It later lost 9 of its holes to Alnmouth (Foxton) G.C. itself a wonderful play. The Village club house has a cosy bar and evocatively smelly locker rooms!
The fees must be the most reasonable in the country for such a beautiful course. BEWARE this course can make a simpering wreck of the hardiest and most skilful player. Definitely not a course for long, wayward hitters. SSS70.
