Superbly situated in the rolling hills north of the town, Alton is a tough and uncompromising 9-hole, with little margin for error. Consistent driving and accurate short approaches are essential. Watch out for the famous 'clubhouse roll' on the greens (first identified by George Cleveland back in the 70's...) where all putts seem to break away from where the clubhouse is. Try it!

Alton is a short but demanding course; it requires straight if not particularly long hitting and a sound short game due to the small greens. The greens are always in good condition and are relatively quick. Although a short course it is a test for all standards and is one of the best nine hole courses around.

9 holes SO WHAT, this course will challenge any standard of golfer. Only 9 holes but 18 tees, it really makes a difference. This course has been hear since 1940 is in great condition with some of the fastest greens around, you need to be fit (some of the climbs you might need a rest half way up) but the fairways are inviting but except for the 8/17 & 9/18 you are not likely to have a level lie. You will always be made welcome. But can only play with a member at weekends.

Alton is a great test of Golf, definitely not for the feint hearted. Its greens are small and very quick; the fairways are fairly tight with a little more grass than a lot of courses. It is always in good condition and do not be put off because it is a 9-hole course, it has 18 tees and on some holes they make a lot of difference.
