I played Appleby in early December following torrential rains and howling gales. The fact that the course was open was a miracle - the fact we on very good summer greens was a real bonus. A lovely moorland course over turf moors and right among the hill farms with interesting holes and, yet, pretty easy on the legs. I doubt if there are many courses quite like Appleby. It was a pleasure to play and pretty good value. There were no par fives but some great individual holes. The big hitters could definitely reach several of the par fours which makes it good fun trying. In the clubhouse, I met some very friendly members who made me feel very welcome. Don't play the greenkeeper for money - he plays off scratch, holds the course record and recently won the grouse finals at St Andrews !

With stunning views of the Pennines, Lake District and hills of the Yorkshire Dales, Appleby GC is set in a remote and idyllic spot.
The course is on common land, so has to contend with the presence of grazing animals - the greens are protected by wires and there are no fairway bunkers. The greens, however, are quite superbly maintained, playing well throughout the year, and with the land being free-draining, the course is generally always playable.
The course is not overly long at just under 6000 yards (par 68), but with no par 5s and four par 4s of over 400 yards, it is not an easy par to achieve, particularly when the wind is blowing, as it invariably seems to. It is a tough but fair test, and tremendously good value for visitors at good value for the day. With a new steward in charge of the clubhouse, there is a good choice of food on the menu and a very welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
I can thoroughly recommend Appleby GC to anyone who hasn't yet played it.
