Designed by Ryder Cup star Des Smyth and amateur international, Declan Branigan Not unduly long by championship standards, nevertheless, Ashbourne, by virtue of its design, is truly a test for every category of golfer. Three man made lakes compliment the Broadmeadow River in a manner that sees water impact on 9 out of the 18 holes. Combine this element of the design with a multitude of trees and it is easy to see where the challenge emanates from.
A comfortable par 4 start is followed by 3 holes where accuracy is of paramount importance. The feature hole on the front nine must surely be the 3rd where a demanding tee shot is followed by a mid-iron approach to a very attractive green fronted by the Broadmeadow River. This hole contrasts starkly
with the 412 metre 8th hole where extensive sand bunkers must be avoided if par is to be realistically
achieved.
Many courses boast of their own Amen Corner but Ashbourne really has such a corner. The 11th, 12th and 14th are as challenging a sequence of holes as you can get. A run of 4 pars can rightfully be followed by a relieved - Amen! The course finishes with a gentle par 4 to a green protected by mature Beech trees.
Boasting pure sand greens complimented by an extensive network of drains, the greens are as fast and true as the more famous linksland greens associated with Ireland. Given sun and some wind the contours can pose serious problems for all golfers. Ashbourne was designed to be enjoyed. The challenge is subtle and all golfers will find the course a pleasure to play.
