Narrow fairways dominate this course. However the golfer has a variety of tees to play from thus altering the difficulty of the course and accuracy required to suit ones handicap. Plenty of water.

A terrible golf course.. the man working in the pro shop was very impolite and totally unhelpful..the course was in very poor condition and 45 euros for a green fee is way over the rate i believe they should be charging (if any). Keep away from this course.. it needs drastic improvement

I've been back to Ballykisteen as I promised I would after work was completed. It's much much improved. Good enjoyable course now. Now it represents value for money.

I played Ballykisteen recently and if Billy F is Colm F's brother then Colm F must be the greenkeper.
The place is a disgrace. Colm F was positive about it. The greens are not perfect. They are over sanded, untended and impossible to putt on (and I'm off 8). The fairways are flooded in parts and just sand in others (and no that's not the bunkers).
"Pro-Shop does not exist yet" Nothing exists yet! It shouldn't be open. Changing rooms in metal porta cabins get 2 stars??? Food four star? Crisps & mars bars from the back of a porta cabin? Parking no stars & sludge. Well that much is true.
The brothers grimm must work for Ballykisteen

I have read all the comments with regard to Ballykisteen and noticed that nobody mentioned the fact that a 85 bedroom hotel and leisure centre and under construction. The 45 holiday lodges are completed with some ground works to complete. I ask with regard to the lodges to be informed that the 10th tee box is to moved taking them out of play. For a place that should be closed the new car park was full. The course has dried dramatically due to the new drainage.The sludge as it was termed all seems to be in an effort to improve the course with the addition of extra water features. Anybody who has visited a golf course under such huge development has to expect some disruption. The club house has been demolished to make way for the new hotel. Any way I enjoy my day in Ballykisteen and I didnt seem to be the only one. Will be some facility when complete in June 2005.

I Played Bally Kisteen over the Christmas holiday and thought the course was in very nice shape for what they where charging. The only complaint i have is that the person in the green cabin knew nothing about golf and he was very very rude. It was like he was there only cause he was getting paid. was not a golfer and certainly no personality. his actions where discusting. hopefully the owner will read this. i am playing there a gain this sunday and will post his name to all. the course is great but staff was very sad. Thank you JILL

Cop on golf is for mens only and the person probally was obnoxious to you cause you are fat and ungly and dont belong on a golf course. They where just doing there job. I see some of my comments may have been a bit harsh and have caused some reaction. I think Ballykisteen has the makings of a great course. The development there seems first class and as I said at the end of my message I will be back just not until it's finished.
I think the problem with Ballykisteen is that there is not enough warning about the condition of the course in advance. Also they were still charging full green fees and didn't take accound of the lack of facilities. Overall nothing that can't be fixed. The back nine were really enjoyable and clearly more advanced than the front nine but the whole course will catch up in time.
Finally I don't have a brother Billy (unless my sister Liz has something to tell me).

I notice these reviews were posted in 2001 and need updating. Ballykisteen was indeed a fine course. HOWEVER it had serious problems with drainage. At the moment the course is being completely dug up in an attempt to fix this problem. Also the club house has been knocked and replaced by rows and rows of holiday homes. These homes stick out onto the 10th fairway and if you are worried about the accuracy of your driving then this will not help. When I played the course about 2 months ago the first 9 holes were a discrace. There was more sand than grass on the fairways (that is not an exaggeration). Long thin rows of sand ran along each fairway and trapped your ball. The rows were perfectly spaced out so that not only was your ball stuck in one but your stance would be on the edge of the next making it impossible to keep your balance. The greens were quite poor and needed weedkiller. The bunkers were empty (I saw 3 or 4 bals BOUNCE out of them). The back nine in contrast seems to be about a year further on development wise and is a much more enjoyable and challenging (my group dropped the front 9 from our competition and determined prizes by the back nine)
The reality is that in about a year (asy late 2005) Ballykisteen will be a great course (assuming the drainage works and they fix the 10th fairway so that you are not playing over new houses). It has all the makings of a challenging course. However at the moment it does not represent value for money. They are still charging full green fees and take no account of the building site that is the front 9.
My advice is avoid Ballykisteen until late 2005. Then I certainly will be back.

Hey Lads the reason Colm gave such a bad reveiw is cause he played golf like a dog on the front nine and cause he runs the golf society he just used the back nine scores. He Is known for this.
But Ballykisteen is going thru major changes, all for the better. It will be a great golf track in the future. Just look at the greens. Greens perfect even give the top courses a challenge. Greens keeper gets Five stars. Pro shop Does not exist yet, But has a world class golfer working in side. (X Your Player)Five Star. Changing rooms Two Stars. Food Four Star. Able to get on Request. Parking No Stars. Walk thru Sludge to get to Course.

The par 5's are not that challenging to an 18 Handicapper like myself and
are very easy to par and birdy.Funny enough some of the par 4's are very
drivable for the bigger hitters so it's safe to say that a high score is
very achievable. The par 3's are also very straightforward with the 15th
being a beautiful hole. The signature hole on the course is the beautiful
8th hole - a very deceiving par 4,with water surrounding a beautiful green.
The big hitters might fancy driving the green - but I've yet to see it been
done and the finishing 18th hole is a tough and beautiful par 5 with 2 lakes
at either side of the fairway and a green surrounded by 5 huge bunkers. A
great finishing hole and a great course.
The clubhouse could offer more - it's a bit too shabby and old fashioned and
could be maintained a bit better.
Very pleasant staff also.

Ballykisteen is a challenging golf course for all levels of handicap. While the fairways are generally narrow, there is usually a chance to recover after a wayward teeshot as its not the longest course in the world.
Despite this, there are some long and challenging par 5's. The 8th hole - a shortist par 4, still requires a good shot over plenty of water to get on the green. The sixteen is a challenging par 3 - with water to the right. On some occasions a 7 iron will suffice but on a windy day a 3 wood is the order of the day!.
The only disappointment overall is the clubhouse - lots of potential but too often closed!. Overall, a course worth visiting!
