  • Course good clubhouse tatty, voucher scheme dubious

My second visit to Bulwell Forest. A short course, quite hilly which has benefited from improvements over the last 2 years between my two games.
Today found the clubhouse very old fashioned, reeking of fried food and very tatty. Pro shop very small but fine. Tees good, paths between holes fine but could be tidier and almost all greens extremely good. Some issues about moving between holes, 17th and 18th is a test of geography and the corner two holes (7 & 8?) can make for a long wait as they share the same fairway.
So overall well worth playing, except for the fact that for the last month at least, Bulwell has advertised a midweek rate of £10, but charged us today £15 with a 2 fore 1 voucher so £18.50 in total. Phoned up afterwards when I realised and politely asked why. Young man on phone, same as who served us this morning in the shop, said that £10 was a promotion (does not state this is temporary anywhere on the huge banners dotting the course or in the clubhouse or shop) and that £15 was the 'normal' green fee. When I pointed out that by the time we had bought a voucher we had only saved 75p each, got very shirty, told me I could argue (I wasn't arguing) with the club secretary but he would say the same, that 2 fore 1 voucher tyope promotions were the death of golf and that is why clubs were closing. Implied we were wrong to expect golf for £5 per person and generally was dismissive, arrogant and had little time for reason.
I told him I would be posting this review, which I have tried to keep balanced, he did not seem the least bit bothered and I feel Bulwells way on interpreting the voucher scheme dubious. He told me the promotion with midweek at £10 would be running for at least another couple of months so clearly £10 is the current price. If you run a 'promotion' through your busiest time of year for everyone on the course, it seems fair to see it as a the standard price.
So i suggest that before you part with your money, you consider that for the £15 plus voucher, you will be getting a discount in pence, and believe me, there are far more salubrious places to play midweek nearby for your £18.50 with voucher, especially when you want to relax afterwards somewhere rather better than a dated pub interior from the 1970's

I have played at the course 5-6 times now. each time I have enjoyed the course and only on a few occasions have I encuontered folk crossing the path and causing a slight delay. All round it's a lovely course and well looked after. The Greens are spot on and the price is very reasonable (£10 a round after 2pm on weekends).
I have met some lovely folk in my travels round the course. They could do with more checks round the course however as you do see kids walking ruond with 1 or 2 clubs who are unaccompanied and clearly haven't paid their way round. Besides this ...7/10

i think that everyone is treated well and with respect alot of golfers are very kind the people who run it are very friendly and the path dosen't interfiere with the game as not many people cross it and the pitches are well looked after

I would like to comment on the review given by John Williamson. The juniors here are treated with great respect and i am sure many people would agree with me!! Also the path that runs across the course doesn't interfere with play as it is a long drive away and it is hardly used. ADAM FEWKES (Hdcp15) AND WAYNE GRIFFITHS (Hdcp19) BOTH JUNIOR MEMBERS OF THE CLUB!!

I must agree with Mr Williamson's comments about the treatment of people at the club. A few friends and myself have played this course a few times, and every-time we are treated like second class citizens. Because we are young, does not mean our money is any less valid than the next persons. The course is a good one, but the attitude of the people who run it makes me never want to play there again. I Have played this course a few times and found the people around the club very unfriendly, particularly towards juniors. Also, there is a public footpath running along the middle of the golf course, which makes smooth play very unlikely.
