Buxton and High Peak Golf Club is generally recognised as the oldest club in Derbyshire. It is a most interesting and unique course, not hard physically but very affected by wind direction. The 9th fairway runs on what was a race course in the 1700s. The clubhouse is cosy and the catering facility first class. Buxton and High Peak Golf Club is a very friendly club to visit.

I must have picked the best day of the year to play Buxton, sun beating down and not a breath. My club was hosting a mixed open and so an alternative on such a day needed to be found. One phone call later and jobs a good unbelievably on a Sunday morning as well, the place was empty. My colleague and I had to keep pinching ourselves in sheer disbelief that there wasn't a sole to be seen. They even take 2 fore 1 vouchers at a weekend and so for £15 you cant grumble. As for the course, I smirk at the 'easy walking' comment on there website, being a lowland golfer my legs weren't akin to those of a mountain goat and so I ached a little the next day. General impressions were that the course was fairly well maintained with the exception of the greens, which were excellent. The layout of the course was not my cup of tea and the distances on the course planner we a little strange. The so-called quarry's came into play well, but were the only part of the course, which wasn't maintained. It was jungle in there which claimed a few decent balata's!!!. With in my view inaccurate information on the course planner I preceded to lay-up on a couple of holes only to see my 3 wood disappear into the abyss of the quarries. Overall though, the best Sunday of the year, without any notice I had a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf on what was an interesting course with super views of the peak district. I have pencilled it into my 'just in case' section.
