Course Details

Course Name: Charnwood Forest Holes: 9 Yardage: 5960 SSS: 69
Although only a nine hole golf course there are 18 tees some of which give panoramic views across the Charnwood Forest. Designed by James Braid the course was founded in 1890 and is the oldest Golf Club in Leicestershire.
Played around volcanic outcrops of rock there are no bunkers, but natural hazards of heather, gorse and bracken await the miss-hit shot. The Course begins with a deceptively tough hole, but it is the 3rd and 4th that are more likely to be remembered due to the stone wall that crosses their fairways (a la North Berwick), threatening the drive at the 3rd and the approach shot at the 4th. Heather, gorse and bracken are the principal natural hazards on the course - plus the occasional boulder.

I am a member. This James Braid designed course is a tradtional heathland venue that plays well at any time of year, ie. I played on winter greens for the first time this winter last weekend (23 Jan) to prove the point. Yes, it's only 9 holes but 9 good 'uns. Good greens. Heather. Bracken. Trees. Lots of wildlife and stunning views. Site of special scientific interest. Oldest club in county and one where it's professional won the Open in 1902. Take a visit you won't be disappointed.

Charnwood Forest is an excellent nine hole course which is demanding throughout. The greens are superb and the fairways are lush and there is no excuse for hitting fat shots here. The layout requires you to play off the yellow tees front nine and blue tees second nine which surprisingly makes the holes look totally different.
What is disappointing is the queue you may get when you play the first nine but it is rotated so it isn't too bad.
The welcome is second to none , thanks to Mick Jackie for excellent food and great hospitality.
