This is a course that I haven't played for a long time and was a welcome change to my usual group of courses. I haven't played there for a couple of years and was frankly slightly disappointed with what I found. The course still has a number of interesting holes and is in general well designed, however, it appears that the course has been subject to high levels of scorching sunshine and dry weather - unlike the rest of the county and courses I have played on of late, as it resembled a dried up field in many areas. The greens had been well watered but were still in a patchy and pitted condition for the majority of the course, however, their surrounds were in the same parched and scruffy state as most of the fairways. Although some of the holes prove tricky I think it is fair to say that the difference between this and the par 3 fun course that runs alongside it is merely the yardage and is therefore probably more suited to beginners than experienced players.

Chesfield Downs is a pay and play course and visiting this course recently for the first time in a couple of years, I was really pleased to see how well it has matured and the improvements that have been made. The course is laid out in undulating parkland with well kept fairways and a number of cunningly placed bunkers and water features (especially on the short par 3 3rd!). The greens are a little hard, but perhaps this is due to my playing it early in the year. An interesting feature, although not part of the course, is the microlite landing strip which abuts the 3rd and the 7th tees - keep your heads down!
A recent addition is the 9 hole Par 3 Lannock Links, which is a bit more challenging than a pitch and put layout and is also finished to the same high standard, and thus is good for beginners as is the driving range.
Lastly, its got a pretty good bar and restaurant. Taking this all into account, I would concede (grudgingly) that makes the weekend green fee is worthwhile!
