Testing lies and slopes and magnificent views over the Shropshire hills and plain. Designed by James Braid in 1898, improved by Harry Vardon. a unique course that has great views, we played on a nice calm day and we all said it was well worth the visit
yes in places it does seem to be 'uphill' but it did not put us off at all, we will return
some great deals to be had - speak to the pro (james) very helpful as were the members and bar staff

Roughly four years ago when I first started playing golf I did not have much idea of what made up a good challenging golf course. I am now a very committed golfer who has played many courses in the U.K. and am yet to find a course with as much character and endless challenges as Church Stretton. The course has many spectacular views, inparticularly that from the seventeenth green. However, if you want to master the difficulties of this wonderful course you're going to need a lot of practice! Even though I don't live in the local area, Stretton's design and the surrounding views are more than enough to keep me coming back for more.

Having had the pleasure of playing this course in July this year, anyone wanting to play a course that offers a different round of golf than the standard then they will enjoy this challenging but fun course. Note of warning this is not for the weak walkers as it is very/very hilly but the views are well worth it.

Thirteen miles South of Shrewsbury along the A49 towards Ludlow, lies the charming town of Church Stretton, nestling neatly at the foot of the Longmynd. Take the road out of the town towards All Stretton and follow the signs for Cardingmill Valley to find the golf course, which some say offers golf in its fundamental form.
Unlike the modern style of golf course, which usually uses sheer length to intimidate the golfer, Church Stretton's course, which was 100 years old in 1998, needs to be negotiated with a degree of guile, where a well aimed shot will generally be rewarded, and the not so well directed shot may well be punished. The fairways are typical of links and hillside courses, undulating, with luscious close knit turf from which the ball can be played with little fear of taking it 'heavy'. The greens are large, quick and true, and although they generally look flat, it will take the most discerning eye to read the subtle borrows and pick the correct line.
One can not mention of Church Stretton's golf course without a word about the views. They are spectacular. Overlooking the Shropshire plain to the North, and the impressive line of hills stretching from Caer Caradoc to The Wrekin, and to the South, Cardingmill Valley, the Burway and on to Ludlow.
Any golfer playing this course will hopefully take away happy memories, with the certainty that there will be plenty to talk about at the 19th hole.
