I was given a copy of the 1000 best courses in britain & ireland for christmas. I have now binned the book. I read reviews of a number of clubs around munster that I have played and was shocked by the Clonmel one. Having played Clonmel about 18 months ago I still rate it as one of the best I have played and had to leap to it's defence. The reviewer claims Clonmel is bland, easy and rates it very badly facility wise. I think this is seriously misleading. I have have found Clonmel to be on a par with the likes of Adare and Dromoland in terms of scenery and mental difficulty. It is not their equal in terms of course maintenance and hazard use but it would not take much to get it there. The clubhouse was excellent (good lockerrooms, food, drink and atmosphere). It also has a floodlit professional looking driving range across the road. Meanwhile courses like Ballykisteen which is a walking disaster zone while construction is going on rate highly (although to be fair in about a year BallyK will be one of the best courses in Ireland just not at the moment). All I can say is who ever wrote this book must have never played Clonmel or must have some serious bias against the course. Perhaps they lost the same number of balls I did and blamed on a bad course rather than a bad player. Of course it is possible that the course has gone downhill in the last couple of years but in order for the review to stand it would have had to literally slip downhill and into the river you can look out to from the 6th or 7th tee. My advice don't buy the book spend the money on greenfees somewhere.

I played Clonmel Golf Club in the summer of 2000 and found it to be very scenic and a good golfing challenge. At the time I was playing off of 15 and would recommend the course to anyone, the views are absolutely breathtaking.

I have again played Clonmel golf course on 28.01.02 and again found it to be amazing. I would thoroughly recommend anyone who enjoys a realistic golfing challenge to play this course. The fairways are like carpets, greens fantastic and the par 3 14th one of the most original holes you will ever a play. Clonmel golf course is without a doubt a gem in Tipperary's crown. Perhaps the only moan is that the hole's are not signaled clearly enough for visitors. Cannot wait to return and break 80 (scored 82 on very windy day).
