I was lucky enough to play in the final of the Daily Telegraph Wilson Matchplay final at Collingtree Park the other day and what an interesting test of golf it is.
The course demands straight driving, as there are a full array of hazards to catch you out. Many of the holes have water in abundance so make sure you take lots of balls. Even on the holes with no water strategy comes into play and this course is definitely not for those who love to blast their way round a course. I have never used a 9 iron so often on a Championship course. Although the criticism of it being a one-hole course may be unfair there is no doubt the final hole is a hum dinger. I would certainly not enjoy having to par this hole to ensure victory. The green however is massive and I felt I was in a different time zone when putting from off the fringe.
On the negative side I felt the catering was below the standard I would expect and the greens I am afraid were poor. Having said that the guy who won the competition went round in one over gross so they couldn't of been that bad. There is an excellent driving range plus three academy holes to get you into the groove.
Finally I won't be dashing back but if you are in the area then would certainly play the course just to experience the thrill of paring the 18th.

Having played this course in both the winter and the summer. Quite simply one of the best courses around for such a small green fee. All the hoo-ha about the greens you can forget. My playing partner was a 28 handicapper and was terrified at the prospect. Yes this a Championship standard course, but use your brain and it wont scare you or your scorecard.

Don't be put off by the fuss over the greens, they are coming along fine. Neither is Collingtree a 'One Hole' course, although the par 5 island green 18th is well worth the wait.
Moderate Green fees for an excellent course, with no small amount of water. My personal favourites are the par 5 4th, with water to the right and OOB left and the par 5 9th, featuring OOB left and right and a pond fronting the green.

If you are not able to get to a true links course, or one of the classic British courses, this is worth an afternoon. Didn't see any walkers which is a shame. Excellent finishing hole especially when your own personnal Ryder Cup trophy rests on that last shot over H2O. Try it.
