I played this course when it was still 9 holes in 1996. Was in the area for a few rounds at Southerness, one of my favorite courses in Scotland, was staying down the road and gave it an early round.
The first hole was a hoot; basically you driving up at a 45 degree hillside. After the mountain goat experience, you get fantastic views of the Solway on a halfway clear day. Really worth the greens fee in and of itself.
And as it was said elsewhere, the people were very friendly and accomodating to the single walk-on golfer.
Back in that day there was a guy named Dennis (I believe) who ran the bar/kitchen. He was a very interesting fellow, got irradiated by either U.S. or British Navy as part of the Cold War experiments on the servicemen. I think they had been in litigation for decades to get reparations. Military strategy--according to Dennis--was to drag it out as long as possible and have less men to pay back. Dennis' lamb chops and salmon--wild caught on the Solway mudflats--were really wonderful meals that I still well remember.
I'll have to make a point of playing the 18 the next time I am back.
If anyone reads this and doesn't mind posting whether Dennis is still around, I'd be much abliged.

Great golf course, some difficult holes but a course never to tire of. the members are very welcoming. The devils elbow is one of the toughest holes I have played and although the first hole is a bit of a climb, once you are up there the rest of the course is a bit easier on the legs
