    May 1999.
This is delightful course and one that as soon as you enter the car park there is a feeling of warmth. This was confirmed as soon as I encountered one of the member who agreed to accompany me around the course.
The front nine is flat and generally what you see is what you get. There are plenty trees to ensure that the fairways are separated but they can be a most unwelcome sight if you should stray from the fairway! However do not be put off by this comment as the fairways are generous so should you really be behind that tree?
There are 2 par 3's, 6 par 4's and a par 5 on the front nine with the par 3 3rd being a very daunting hole with the Exeter to Barnstaple railway line to the right and a number of bunkers guarding the green. It is 185 yds from the yellow and 195 from the back tee. I played it into the wind and it as playing over 200 yds - quite a challenge!
The back nine is a different story. After coming back to the club-house the 10th is placed on top of a steepish hill and whilst only 266-288 yards in length its not easy when there is a stream crossing the fairway 150 yds in front of you.
The 11th and 12th are arrived at by a very strenuous climb up through the woods but well worth the effort. The par 3 13th must be one of the best in Devon, 141-167 yards with the railway to your right, the trees to the left and a pond in front of the green. There is no real bale out other than long is better that short.
Get on the green and you feel a million dollars. When you do return to the club house the catering is magnificent and even for the non golfer well worth the trip, Jane will always make you feel at home.
Take a visit to Downes Crediton and if, like me, you enjoyed your round let me know. I'll be going back again for sure.w.pat@england.com
