This is considered by many pundits of the game to be the best test of golf in the Sheffield area. The course is located at the highest spot in the area (900 ft) and the views across the adjacent valley and towards the York plain are magnificent.
The course on a calm day is joy to play, especially in the summer when the excellent greens are true fast - the putting then becomes a real pleasure.
At Par 71 with five par 3s and only one par 4 under 400 yds the basis of many a good round is to get in those par 3s. Subsequent scoring is then to maintain a reasonable score on the long fours - there are few easy birdie threes to be had.
The club has recently embarked on a major bunker refurbishment which entailed sever disruption to its members due to the significant earthworks entailed. However, the result is enhanced profiles and deeper hollows and consequently some consider the course now to present a serious challenge to it far away more famous neighbour - Lindrick. It is certainly a tough test under normal Sheffield winter conditions due to the greater wind factor.
The club has hosted several major county events including the English County Championships. Alison Nicholas, who recently won the US Ladies Open was principle member for many years.
The clubhouse and its rules are those that reflect true tradition, jackets, ties in the main bar and dining area although relaxed casual are allowed is permitted on the veranda and the men's bar - where a good snooker table is located! The club has been a favourite haunt of several world-class snooker players during the World Snooker Championship, played annually at the famous Crucible theatre in the city centre just 3 miles away.
Visitors should note that mobile phones are positively not allowed both off and on the course - thank goodness!
A great day out for anyone.
