Course Name: Hellidon Lakes Holes: 18 Yardage: 6705 SSS: 72
Set in 240 acres of scenic rolling English countryside, the spectacular 27 hole course at Hellidon Lakes has something for everyone. The golf is designed to provide challenges for the brave and less difficult routes for the less well accomplished. The course winds between 16 lakes, ponds and woodland in an area of classic countryside, designated a Special Landscape Area. Rarely in England can one escape so completely from the noise and distractions of modern life. Hellidon is a haven for wildlife and for those seeking, if only briefly, to experience the countryside as it used to be.

Beware! This will test your stamina and patience. There are three loops of nine but the red and the blue make 18 challenging holes. This is a roller-coaster of a course and the ball frequently rolls down the steep slopes and into the vicious rough. It can also be a confusing and better signposting would help; golfers who like to belt the ball almost out of sight from the tee will invite trouble while those who like to 'feel' their way may be frustrated. The gimmicky final hole - 'Holy Lake' - invites you to drive across a stretch of water towards the impressive clubhouse. For most of us that's just too far and going round the edge is far more sensible. Another hole - the 'Elbow' - has a ridiculous dog-leg to the left and strange humps in the fairway. As a conference and country hotel complex, Hellidon Lakes is impressive. But if you want a relaxing game
without too much 'mountaineering' - forget it.

I have played this course on 3 occasions. It is fantastic and when the golf goes wrong as it surely does the surrounding views and wildlife go along way to relieve the pressures. The course is well managed and the greens are superb. One day I will be able to drive across the lake on that final hole.

As a member I know this course well. It provides a real test for your golfing skills. It is long, has lots of trouble and the greens (even in their current good condition) are a real test. It is the type of course that you will really enjoy and promise yourself you will come back and play it better next time. All other facilities are first class and if the golf is bad you will enjoy just being out there. It is not your average golf course, it is not well known but well worth a visit.
