At less than 5000 yards, this is a short course and its situation on the plateau behind the Bournemouth/Christchurch seashore means that the terrain is generally flat, which means it's quite easy to walk.
But don't let the short length and the flatness fool you. No par 5s but two 240 yard par 3s and some longish and interestingly arranged par 4s mean that it's challenging and you have to be able to hit a straight shot - otherwise, you'll find yourself deep in the trees that decorate the whole course.
When we played (April 30 2005) the fairways and greens were in outstanding condition and the experience was very pleasant (especially as we won our match). The trees give some (but not total) shelter from the winds whipping in off the English Channel and it's in a lovely setting. Highly recommended.

Whilst Highcliffe castle may seem a very short course it is still a very good test of skill. All the fairways are very narrow and many of them have out of bounds running along side. The course is situated approximately 500 yards from the sea, but their are no seas available.
Highcliffe Castle is a woodland course, with trees running along most fairways. Their is also a very atmosphere at the club with all the members being very friendly. The club is also a keen promoter of Junior Golf.
So if your looking for a challenge and some good company I strongly recommend playing at Highcliffe.
