I think Hillside is a quality course and is the best course I have ever played. The course is much better than Royal Birkdale. Many people agree with me even the great Greg Norman. My advice to any one is to try and play this course it is magic.

I played recently as a guest of a member. Having lived in Southport all my life and hearing many great things about the course, I was delighted to get the opportunity to play the famous links.
The front nine was excellent with a very difficult start running alongside the Southport to Liverpool train line.
The back nine was awesome, the 11th and 17th holes will live in my memory for a long time. I could travel the world and not play a better back nine than this. The hospitality in the clubhouse was first class, not as stuffy as one would anticipate and a couple of frames of snooker to round the day off, without having to wear a shirt and tie! All in all a superb course, in excellent condition with excellent views from elevated teas across the dunes to the Irish Sea.

A superb golf course. The greens were fantastic and we knew we had played somewhere special. The history of the club was very evident with the Redcoats past captains on the wood panelled clubhouse walls.

We played the course as guests of a member and his son, and found it to be in excellent shape even at this time of year. The fairways were superb with just the right height of rough to make any stray shots difficult to get back in play and the greens true and fast. Some very picturesque holes amongst the dunes on the back 9. All in all a good test of golf for low handicappers, but difficult for high handicappers, when the wind blows in off the sea.
With a nice friendly clubhouse to top everything off.... Well worth the visit.
Steve and Al (Oakie Boys) 19 handicappers

In my view better than Royal Birkdale, which is literally next door, you can see Birkdale from the 17th tee. Starts off flattish, and then gradually winds up to rolling dunes. The 11th, a par 5, is superb with the tee 70 foot above the fairway which lies along a valley between the dunes. The 4th, another par 5, has a huge bunker, backed by railway sleepers, which if you have placed the tee shot well is clearble, allowing a chance of reaching in two. I have heard that Greg Norman said that this was his favourite Links course in England. Who am I to argue.
