Course Details

Course Name: The Irvine Holes: 18 Yardage: 6408 SSS: 71
The Irvine Golf Club is an open championship final qualifying course 6408 yards par 71. A links course with heavy heather, Irvine puts a premium an accuracy off the tee. Local knowledge helps a lot, and position, not length, is key.

Between Irvine and Kilwinning on the coast, this Open Championship qualifying course was designed by James Braid. All links courses have dips and hollows that can kick the ball off the short grass, but at The Irvine this trait is pronounced and can be maddening for first-time players.

Played May 2004. A classic old course that truely runs with the land. Some high holes on a ridge with other holes on the low ground below. A unique, fun experience. First time around, without a caddy, you are going to make some mistakes on aim and distance, but so what. Every one of our four ball match loved the course -- from our most skilled player at 7.0 to me at 17.5.

Although I have lived 15 minutes away from Irvine for 30 years I only finally played the course at Bogside in 1999. What a joy! It was in superb condition with a great variety of holes and very interesting. This is golf design at its best - wrested from a wild landscape with its form dictated by nature. It fully deserves its status as an Open Championship qualifying venue. I can only think that Gerard Sundstrem (below) played a 'tough' game and has 'took the huff'. Do not be swayed by his negative view - all of my companions were seasoned golfers who have played on the finest courses across Britain and Ireland (and beyond) and they were unanimous that we were nuts not to have played Irvine sooner.

I visited The Irvine Golf Club in 1999. It is a Midden. Not a patch on my home club - Golf Club Motzener near Berlin.

Just returned from a three day golfing break in Scotland. Played two other top courses but Bogside was simply fantastic.
A fair test of golf in fantastic condition.
