A great course. Best value anywhere. Like the best courses, it offers more subtlety and poses more questions than it should. The quality is improving every time I visit.
Along with The Heritage, this is unquestionably the star course in this part of the World and it costs a 10th of the price to pay.

An open but testing course, with very pleasant views. If you have trouble playing on slopes, and there are plenty on this long course, then you'll struggle to play to your handicap. The 11th is nearly 600 yards off the white tees and the green is on top of a very steep hill guarded by bunkers on either side - you'll do very well to get no worse than a single bogey here. The downside is that play can be slow - a round, as part of a four ball, has taken me nearly five hours.

The old foot-ball cliché 'a game of two halves' sums up the 9-hole course at Lullingstone Park pretty well. The first five holes are probably as good as you will find on a public course anywhere and well worth the green fee on their own. Unfortunately the excellent start is spoiled by the severe slopes of the 6th, 7th and 8th, and the lack of imagination of the 9th.
At 2432 yards, par 33, with no par 5s, it's a short course but asks a few questions of your driving accuracy and approach play. For me the favourite holes are the second, third and fourth - a 373 yard sharp dogleg left with trees and rough guarding both sides, a 384 yard corridor of trees where you tee wide of the left side (a slicer's graveyard) and a 146-yard par 3 across a valley to a green guarded by trees on the right and gaping bunkers across the front.
The severity of slope on the 6th, 7th and 8th make holding the greens and fairways an almost impossible task. In my opinion, it can't be a good golf hole if you have to aim to land in the rough to get a better second shot.
The condition of the course is variable; it gets very dry and hard in a hot spell and yet soaks easily after rain. Some of the more exposed greens can get very bare and the position of the pins, particularly on the 4th and 8th make putting a lottery. I've three-putted on the 8th from 8 feet and hardly had to move my feet - it just keeps coming back down! If the rough is left long on the first 5 holes, be prepared to lose a few if you go off line - and be prepared to be offered them back for 50p on the next hole by a ball-hawker!

A thoroughly enjoyable, challenging round of golf, played in pleasant surroundings. On fast responsive greens, more suited to a members course rather than a public.
