Mapledurham is a short course, and off the front tees can be quite straightforward. The length is due to the fact that it is a course built originally for beginners. Demand from more experienced golfers was greater than expected, and great efforts have been made over five years to improve the course.
This has been done with much success. 80 odd bunkers now tighten both tee shots and make some of the approaches very difficult. The back tees have been pushed right back, and new ones have been added. The 5 par 3s are now all good hits into tight greens.
The front nine is open parkland with the tee shot on 7 with water on both sides of a tight driving area making this the toughest shot on the course. 2 shortish par fives have been made dangerous by cunning fairway bunkers making these 'all or nothing' holes.
The back nine is a real contrast - it s carved out of Chazey Wood and trees and close out of bounds make it a real gamblers nine. 9,10 and 11 are all short birdie chances, but can be disastrous if the drive is wayward. One feature is the 18th - a short par three with water guarding the green makes for a great climax to tight match play.
To summarise - on a summers day off the visitors tees, Mapledurham is relatively straightforward. However, whent he tees are pushed back, and the pins are placed behind the sand and the water, this is a tough test for everybody - belied by the fact that the course record only matches the standard scratch.
Highly enjoyable, this is by far the most sociable gold club I have known. Don't let the scorecard fool you.
