Quality layout this with an excellent twilight rate. Looks innocuous at the start but the first hole turns into the opener from hell (long, uphill approach, sloping fairway, small green - par would be nice thanks). good greens, lots to think about. really enjoyable golf.

Established in 1888 as a 9 hole course and then extended to 18 in recent years, Marlborough provides a tough challenge for any golfer. Located on a hill just outside Marlborough town it has 360 degree views over the surrounding countryside and an opening par 5 that twists, turns and undulates eventually reaching a small raised green. You need accuracy and patience to reach this one. The first nine are the latest additions to the course and blend in seamlessly with the original design. However, where the original holes are sited on the relatively flat common, the new holes are decidedly hilly. This makes the full 18 two separate games and keeps the players interest all the way round. Full concentration and a good strike off the tee are necessary at the par 3 17th. It's long and has a very tricky green. Yours truly missed it easily, short and right. The staff and management are courteous and efficient going out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. The clubhouse is modern and has excellent facilities including a well stocked bar with good food available most of the day. If you are in the area it's well worth a visit.
