From the 11th hole onwards you start to skirt the picturesque houses on the right hand extremity of the course and the variety of architecture and well-groomed gardens adds an attractive dimension to the boundary of the course. During the Howard Keel event many of the residents were picnicking on the fringes of the course and the temptation to join them was compelling.
The last four holes whilst wonderfully picturesque being fashioned into the undulating terrain are demanding in terms of long drives and equally long second shots. You also need to be accurate to find the strategically placed greens. On the 15th hole you have to decide whether to attempt to clear the culvert from the tee or take a long iron and settle for an uphill mid-iron approach to the elevated green. I opted for the former and lived to regret the decision failing by the narrowest of margins to avoid a watery grave. Such is the temptation that next time I'll try again but aim to keep my drive tighter to the left hand side. I'll leave you to make your own decision! The 17th and 18th are particularly good finishing holes and the 478 yard closing hole can be reached with two good shots but staying on the green is particularly tricky with a large tree in the line of fire and a steep bank on the right of the green which collects any shot slightly off line.
Playing Mere is a delightful experience and the course is beautifully maintained.
