Most members just knock the second into the landing area in the valley, from where they wedge the third blind onto the green. The climb from the valley up to the green is about 40-50 ft. The course largely continues in this challenging vein with the 2nd being one of four pars 5's of well over 500 yds. I scored one of my rare eagles at this monster hole: from the back tees I needed driver, 5-wood and the single putt.
One of the distinctive features of the course are its double greens, of which there are three: 1st+16th, 2nd+14th and 5th+12th. The greens themselves are just about the smoothest I've ever had the pleasure to roll a putt across. They are maintained using an organic method started by Mr. Sutherland, who applied the same practice to the rest of the course. As a result, it is a common sight to see various game birds strutting across parts of the course near the pine
plantations. Watch out for beautiful pheasants near the 14th green /15th tee area.
Other memorable holes include those around the turn, which dive down, around and back up through a steep river valley, the 13th (which invites big hitters to bite off the dog-leg over a pine plantation), the 16th (beautiful views over the Bedfordshire plain) and the last, which from the back tee is a fantastic, long, finish.
In short, Millbrook, or Lyshott Heath as it now is, represents a combination of wonderful scenery and brilliant golf.
I only wish I were still a member!
