Course Description

Murcar Links is a natural seaside course in the finest of Scottish traditions. Established in 1909 to the design of Archie Simpson, later refinements were made in the 1930's by five times Open Champion James Braid. Recently it has undergone a course alteration and improvement programme under Graeme J Webster's Team Niblick Limited. It has also opened a new Clubhouse and practice facility in 2006. The testing Murcar Links was used by the European Seniors Tour in 2005 and the European Challenge Tour in 2006 as a tournament venue. At 6,504 yards in length, it has a par of 71 and a standard scratch of 73 indicating its degree of difficulty (USGA Rating 72.6 / USGA Slope Rating 138).

The Murcar Links is set in spectacular terrain, with views of the North Sea visible from nearly every hole. The fairways and greens are shaped by the sandhills for which Murcar Links is renowned. The elevated tees open up a staggering panorama of the Aberdeen City skyline to the South; the unbroken line of the horizon to the East; and the vast curve of coast stretching as far as the eye can see towards Cruden Bay in the North.

The Murcar championship links provides a stern, uncompromising test of golf and is not for the faint-hearted. It is the challenge of playing golf to fairways curling round and between the dunes, gorse and heather, calling for every shot in the book (and if the wind is up, a few more besides). According to Golf Monthly writer Barry Ward, "the fairways are tighter than a taxman's purse!"

Over the years, Murcar has hosted many professional tournaments and national amateur championships and is a 'must play' course if in the Aberdeen area.

Having read the previous reviews, I felt I had to add my own. My friends
and I have played all over Scotland and Northern England, and all have a
passion for the links. Out of all the links played including, Muirfield, St
Andrews, Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay etc I still have a very special place in
my heart for Murcar. Superb layout, great greens, and some very special
memorable holes (Sepentine for one) Pound for pound, it has to be the best
value around, especially as we managed to use 'two for one' tickets. Food
excellent, friendly clubhouse etc. If you are coming to this area, do
yourself a favour and give this a go....you won't be disappointed.
