I played the course for the first time in three years on 25/10/2003, having first played it over twenty years ago, and was sorry to see the state of the greens. The dry summer has been hard on golf courses, but the greens looked neglected. The course was much quieter than expected for a Saturday morning. A member told us that many members had left the club in disappointment after the contracting out of maintenance.

Lovely golf couse which I have been playing on and off for about twenty years. But this year the greens have been the worst I have ever seen them. What is happening and who is responsible for this state of affairs?
One of the Town's greatest facilities seems to be being let to go to ruin.
Please Geoff isn't it time that letters should be exchanged in the Courier?

I find the front nine a very challenging set of nine holes, especially for the higher handicapper. The first hole could be accused of being easy until you stand on the tee and find a large tree in your path, to avoid it is more difficult than it seems. The 5th hole is a par 3 and a straight shot is essential with a steep slope to the left and a slice would lead to out of bounds. A challenging par 5 follows, which on a wet day can be very difficult.
The back nine is somewhat flatter than the front, with the holes being longer and more trees to contend with. They have recently put new water hazards on the back nine and if you get distance by hitting and using the role, then some of you may be dropping a few points.
Overall I enjoy this course as it offers people like me a challenge without breaking the bank and they do keep the course in good order.

A challenging opening 9 holes and cracking views across the Leamington and Warwickshire countryside make Newbold Comyn one of the best municipals in the area. Trouble awaits anyone who can't keep the ball straight off the tee and the punishment can be unforgiving. Fairways and greens are extremely well kept, making the course a pleasure to play. Exceptional value and great fun!

I would not argue with Mr Heyville's statement that their are few hazards on the fairways, the addition of which would enhance the course, but his comment about the fairways being wide is misleading. They are no wider, probably less, than most courses, and on either side of practically every fairway is either a steep slope, dense tree areas or out of bounds, on both the front and back nine. As a result if you are not a straight hitter (consistently) then this course is a challenge to play to your handicap (and remember to take a few spare balls!)
