We had a really good evening at Northwood, so good we went back the next evening. The course has a variety of interesting and challenging holes, and the fairways and greens were excellent. However, the established colonial feel to the club was spoiled when received several comments from members which were unnecessary which did not make us feel welcome.

Very sorry if you made to feel unwelcome on your visit to Northwood. In the bad old days, we might have been a bit stuffy as clubs were often like that then. Nowadays we go out of our way to welcome visitors and ensure they enjoy their time with us.

The course is set in mature woodland with the River Pinn a feature on many holes. There are many attractive holes but probably the most surprising feature is the fairways, many of which have the type of undulations that are more normally found on a links course.
The course opens with the classic short 4, par 5, par 3 start, which gives no really warning of the challenges that are to follow. Then comes four tough par 4s, which even the scratch golfer will be happy to circumvent in 16 shots. The last of these shares a double green with the 9th, which has a big ridge in it. Some challenging puts can result if you get on the wrong section.
The second 9 is some 400 yds shorter that the 1st and presents a different set of challenges. Whereas the front nine puts a premium on length, the back 9 puts the premium on accuracy. It opens with a very dangerous short par 4 to a green set deep in the trees and surrounded on 2 sides by bunkers fully 6ft deep. Then an easy 5 provides a short respite before the examination begins in earnest: a long 4 across the river Pinn, a long 3 (214 yds), a tricky 4 to a 2 tier green, a mid-length 3 before another hard and dangerous par 4. The 9 finishes with two shortish par 4s to the 18th green, which is right outside the clubhouse.
All in all, a very pleasant golf course. There are no fierce carries and little impenetrable rough but if you can knock it round here to your handicap, you can reckon you have played pretty well. Just one thing, a large portion of the course is on clay so it doesn't play too well during the winter, rather plan your visit between, say, 21/5 and 30/10.
