Arriving at the Championship course, I thought it looked rather open. This proved true but the great design and condition of the course meant that every hole (bar perhaps the 1st) gave a different challenge. I played this early season and the greens were still some of the best and fastest I've ever come across. There are many subtle water hazards incorporated and thankfully the course has not been subjected to mass movement of earth during construction, leaving it with a distinctly natural feel. Playing very long off the back tees, it is still a fair test and the refreshment buggies and hut really make you feel like you are being looked after. The most enjoyable round I've
had in a good while.

The Arderne is the short course attached to the golf academy at Portal, but don't confuse it with a pitch'n'putt.
The first three holes used to form the 3rd, 4th and 5th on the Championship Course (I believe), and the whole course is set on similar terrain and has the same beautiful views as it's bigger brother.
The course drains well and is normally in excellent condition. The greens are fantastic - but don't expect any straight putts. All the greens undulate and step wildly and are quite quick even when wet. In mid-summer misjudged uphill putts will return to your feet and anything not tickled downhill will be back on the fairway.
Add to this nice elevated 'target' par 3's and a drivable par 4 (or two?) and you have a course which makes a welcome and entertaining change from your typical 'we're really trying to be an 18' nines around. Recommended.

Absolutely fantastic course, easily in the top 5 of Cheshire's best (probably in the top 5 of England's best too!) Varied course, extremely challenging. A lot of water hazards and sand bunkers make straight hitting a must. Fairways as good as most greens (you could go round with a putter if you want!). The Greens are absolutely fantastic, as well as very hard. Views of the best of Cheshire from all angles of the course. Although quite expensive, I would suggest you play this course at least once in your golfing life!

I believe that this course is one of the best in Cheshire. Also I have played both Portal courses and the Premier course is a whole lot better. It is much more interesting to play. The Clubhouse has a fantastic aura. It is the friendliest course I have ever been to and I recommend it.
