Richmond Park Golf ClubRichmond Park Golf Club has two public courses in the heart of Richmond Park. The park is a royal park created by King Charles I in 1637. It is a massive park and indeed takes about 20 minutes to drive around. The topography is parkland with some woodland and grassland. Driving through the park on the public roads, it is not uncommon to see deer and other wildlife roaming the park. It is truly a remarkable park in the heart of the one of the world's busiest cities.

The courses were originally established in 1923 to allow the public access to golf without incurring the expense of joining established clubs. King George commissioned JH Taylor and Hawtree to lay out the Duke's course. The Prince's course was opened in 1925. However the courses were somewhat neglected until Golf Course Management were awarded a 25 year operator licence by the Department of the Environment in 1985. They have since invested a considerable sum in modernising both courses (Hawtree & Sons)and creating the extensive pro-shop facilities.

The courses are run on the pay and play principle and visitors are always welcome. Clubs and buggies are also available for hire. Visitors can also use the driving range. The pro-shop is one of the largest in Britain and is a huge retail store as well as traditional pro-shop.

Note that the clubhouse has moved to its new location and there is no longer a driving range or putting green (expected end of 2013). The course has been re-arranged but was in good shape. The Princes course is now 9 holes. Rental clubs are old and not complete sets (despite what they said on the phone). But played with some great people and everyone seemed very nice.

This is a good course - I played it twice as a beginner and it gives you a variety of different holes challenges your skill set. I would thoroughly recommend it.
The staff were also very friendly and flexible.
    Thanks.

The dukes course at Richmond Park is a reasonably flat and open golf course. However this is not to say it is without character. The front nine offers a stern test of course management with multiple streams crossing the fairways, ready to catch the lazy big hitters. After negotiating the front nine a barage of testing par 3's await you. Play them right and a par is only an average score. However play them wrong and a 5 can devour your score card. All in all the Dukes course is a superb course for the begginer to the scratch golfer. As far as public courses in the London area go, this is a golf course of the highest order.

Richmond has 2 good fun courses, which although slow will get you out into the fresh air for a cracking game, they have wide fairways appealing to the beginner end of the golf scale. Ian Mak's, seems to have had a thoroughly miserable time, maybe he should go and play elsewhere. In relation to his etiquette statement, there are some local rules applying at this course which speed up play, golfers do generally let fast players though. I have played the course about 10 times and apart from speed of play, can`t fault it.

Both courses at Richmond Park are ideal for high handicap golfers. Wide fairways (if you miss one fairway alot of the time you'll end up on another one), little rough to cope with, relatively undemanding holes. Course tends to be in better condition at the beginning of the summer when it hasn't been used too much. However, I have heard rumours that at its peak, during the summer, that the course is the busiest in Europe - that wouldn't surprise me. During this period I highly recommend spendingyour money on a booking card - otherwise you will have to queue for up to 3 hours for a round at the weekend.
