A course of outstanding beauty and condition is being spoilt by overcrowding and thus a course we would be reluctant to play again, but our first gripe would be the fact we spent the best part of €1000 on green fees and within the pro shop, to be omitted from the bar for a well needed pint after a 6 hour 15 minute round, due to a wedding party being on-site. Now while we understand that this is a business they are running and wedding parties would be a much needed injection of funds into a declining bar scene, there was no alternative arrangement made i.e. could we not have been seated in the Hotel adjacent?
Whilst no one actually enjoys hurrying through a game of golf, as its meant to be enjoyed and there ought to be time for conversation, personal reflection and appreciation of the course. At the same time 6hrs and 15minutes is somewhat consuming and painfully slow. The ranger / marshal was aware of this delay on the first tee and proclaimed ‘it’s going to be a good 6 hours today lads’, we thought he was joking and not languishing in the incompetence of course management and golf etiquette. Old Tom Morris must be turning in his grave......

that's not good. we are from the states, and golf in the southwest annually. decided to go to the dublin area this year, and would not return there.
planning on making this course and hotel our home base, but not under these conditions. what month of the year was this?
        thanks

Old Tom Morris course is a classy links course well worth a visit. It offers great views of the many bays around Downings and is full of interesting, well-designed holes. The hotel, which offers reduced green fees if you are a guest, is okay but a tad over-priced and staid for the under-40s.

Lovely links course especially the first 10 holes and especially the view off the 17th Tee Box.
Didn't like the green staff - started cutting tee boxes when I was teeing off. Arriving and starting to cut greens when I was lining up approach shots - left a bit of a sour taste.

You'd be giving out if they didn't cut the grass... Any excuses for playing brutal golf.

A wonderful golf course hotel. Spectacular views over many bays on the first seven holes. The back eight holes are parkland and not as good as the first ten holes (these are true links holes).
I played there two years ago and managed to play the new eight holes (links) whilst the club were working on them and they will be a worthy addition to the course.
All round an excellent weekend away.

A dream come true to play this old course. Beautiful views, on the back nine especially. I really enjoyed the blind shot on 16 (since I hit the green off the tee)maybe I should just close my eyes on all my tee shots. I hope to some day get there again and play another round (which by the way took only three hours).Maybe, Colin and Nick should play here more often. A great experience. There is something quite nice about sharing space with cattle and sheep. P.S. I ONLY LOST 6 BALLS.

Quite enjoyed this Old Tom Morris course...one or two holes I would dig up but for the most part a very delightful course with absolutely wonderful views especially on the back nine.
