Be sure to bring your best driving and putting game to this delightful HS Colt-designed course in south-west London. Set on the edge of Wimbledon Common, it shares the same heathland terrain of one of London's wildest commons. Its gently undulating land also attracted Roman emperor Caesar to camp there on his BC foray to Britain. One of the holes - the fourth - demands a short chip-and-run over what was once an embankment of the emperor's camp. Royal Wimbledon isn't so long as to overpower shorter hitters, or rob longer hitters of a challenge. The par-fives mix risk with reward, while the par-threes demand thought from the tee. Some of the par-fours on the front nine are a little permissive, offering little more than parkland pitch and putt. But the sobering challenges of par-fours 14, 15 and 16 will have most reaching for the hip flask. Rugged heathland vegetation skirts the edges of several holes. A few observant minutes spent in the heath can swell the size of your practice bag. On some of the outlying holes, you might think you were playing in deepest Africa rather than the middle of London. While on a working holiday from Australia, for nearly a year I was lucky enough to work behind the 'men only' bar at Royal Wimbledon, a club which also kindly let me play as much golf as practicable on a wonderful course. I sort of hope the club has changed but not changed! Fans of PG Wodehouse will relish the late afternoon teas ('toast with lashings of gentlemen's relish, please!') served next to the fire. When I was there in 1991 the clubhouse was only open to members, depriving many visitors of one of the amazing experiences of Great Britain - the class system.
