Nine hole course expanded to eighteen quite a while ago. The first six and last two are splendid holes with tight woodland and a good challenge, especially the last two which play over the lake (once used by Barnes Wallis to test the bouncing bomb).
The middle ten are a lot younger, with lots of space, but still several holes play long and the course challenges anyone with a weak driver.

Silvermere was the first course I ever played and I am hard pushed to think of a public course which I have enjoyed more. It is long and begins with six very narrow, wooded holes. Just when your blood pressure approaches club-hurling point, everything opens up and the going is reasonable if you don't mind par four holes built on cliff faces. One brute in particular will allow you to try each of your clubs at least once. The 18th is designed to allow the person you are playing with to show-boat a perfect approach shot over the water, in front of the crowds, who turn, cheer, and wait expectantly for you to repeat the performance...
