South Essex Golf and Country Club lies mainly facing south in the southern sunshine. The panoramic views over the Thames Valley and Kent are truly magnificent. The three courses Hawk, Vixen and Heron, the greens and practice range have been designed with spaciousness and nature in mind and have blended into the established gently rolling landscapes. The beautiful bluebell carpeted woodlands have been used in the layout, undisturbed except for the pleasant walks from the greens to the tees. The club is five years old with the completion of the new clubhouse expected end of '98.

This 9 hole course needs the most thought processes out of the three at south essex. Attacking or defending this course could determine your score. The first two short holes (both a par 5 then a par 4) lead u to believe that an easy round is approaching. The shock comes at the next hole. Hole three is a medium length par 4 but with a ditch strategically placed diagonally across it. A slope runs down to this ditch on both sides. An excellent and long shot is needed to clear the ditch, so most players must play as close as they dare without entering it. This provides a longer approach shot than first expected, and with two greenside bunkers and a sloping green, the hole becomes much more difficult. Hole 4 tees off with Dog wood on the right preventing a view of the green. A long approach shot is again needed to a heavily guarded green, even if the fairway bunker is avoided. Hole 5 is the longest par 4 of this nine. It slopes downwards to the bottom of the green where it begins to slope up again. If a the front, a bunker to the right and a lake at the back. With the clubhouse overlooking most people stumble in trying to impress rather then concentrating on their game. This course is a brilliant end to a round. If the Heron/Hawk combination is selected, then the hawk course comes in to its own as a make or break nine.
