I played Spanish Point on Wednesday, Sep 26, 2001. David Fitzgerald set me up with some rental clubs and away I went. My appraisal differs somewhat from others I have read. The eighth hole called the 'Terror' is just a simple par-3, 100 yards from tee to green. I am a 'senior,' so I hit a 9-iron from the tee to the front of the green. If I were to rate the holes on the course in order of difficulty, number seven would be my choice for the 'signature' hole. It's a 341-yard par four, uphill all the way. The green is protected by a sand bunker on the right front, so the tendency is to play ones shot to the left of the pin placement. The green slopes toward the player on the approach shot, then it 'breaks' toward the back in the middle.
On the back left, about 20 yards from the centre of the green, there's a huge pot bunker, probably 40-feet deep. Behind the green on the right is a deep gully, also filled with the long rough for which links courses are noted. Luckily, my approach shot was just left of the flagstick. It went off the back of the green about 5-yards, but it wasn't in trouble. My playing partner hit the front of the green and his ball rolled back about 40-yards. I was happy with a bogey on number-7. I'm not sure what the 'rise' is from tee to green on number-7, but the flagstick on that hole is visible from almost everywhere on the course. It may even be the highest point on the course. I enjoyed my round and all in all, I thought the course was delightful!

I came across this site by accident!! I grew up playing golf at Spanish Point and I've seen a fair few changes to the club and the course over the years. In my youth, it was a par 27 course, but with some fearsome par 3's, at least 5 of which were over 200 yards, one being as long as 240 yds - try getting home in one shot when the wind was against! The signature hole, however, was always 'The Terror' a Par 3 of about 85 yards, but a designed to strike fear into all players! Usually into the wind, it has a 'valley of death' in front (about 30 feet deep), out of bounds right and sand dunes to the left and back! The course is now a Par 32, with only a few of the old greens remaining. The Terror remains, but the green has been moved a little to the left for safety. I have not played regularly at Spanish Point for over 10 years now (I live in England), but I continue to play at Ely City Golf Course to a 5 handicap. I never miss a chance to play Spanish Point when in the area, and would urge anyone who passes to play it!! You'll remember is forever!!!
