If you judge golf courses by the stateliness of their clubhouses, you will likely think Stranraer is the county prison.
Garish green trim on a modern stone box, the clubhouse is the only bad thing I have to say about this quiet little gem that lays on the SW coast.
The last of [I believe] James Braid's designs; Stranraer is a fine golf course where you will still find more members than tourists and they are all to happy to explain the virtue of this very fair, moderate length 'links' layout. ['links as only the par 4,5th and the tee box on the par 3 sixth play very near the water, the rest of the course is situated on a plateau above the water, although not immune to the wind and with very nice views!]
The course starts quite easy with the first 9 has mostly short to moderate length par 4's, although the long, straight away 9th can be very difficult. The second nine is more challenging, I think, with a lovely 10th [could be from Spyglass or Cypress Point, a gently bending right par 4], 2 solid par 3's [the 12th and 15th], and 2 very good par 5's [the DLL 14th is excellent!]
I played this course in August, '00, playing off 6 and shot 80 on a calm day. If you find yourself in the area, the 18 pounds to play is well worth it and another fine feather in the cap of any golfer who enjoys good golf.
