A Brief Introduction

The course, designed by the celebrated architect Harry Colt, comprises two loops of nine, each beginning and ending at the Clubhouse. The first nine are comparatively flat whilst the second are sited in much more undulating terrain. Strategically placed bunkers call for accuracy from the tee, plateau greens make for demanding approach shots whilst subtle borrows add to the pressures of putting. With a length of 6,250 yards and a par of 70, the course provides an excellent test of golf.

In 2000, Donald Steel and Company, the international golf course architects, were retained to carry out a comprehensive review of the course. In the light of the technological advances in equipment, they recommended the repositioning of a number of bunkers to restore the challenge for the better players (whilst making life a little easier for the average player) in a manner that is true to the spirit of Harry Colt. They also added weight to the need to manage the woodlands in order to maintain the beautiful views from the course and to encourage heathland regeneration.

Points Of Interest

  • Beautiful scenery, with spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs and the countryside of Kent and Sussex.
  • Well drained, sandy soil. Save for snow and ice, Tandridge is seldom closed by the weather and is an excellent venue for golf all the year round.
  • Mature woodlands containing many specimen trees. The Club attaches great importance to the environment and has established a woodland and ecological management programme.
  • An extensive bird population. A member of the greenkeeping staff is a keen ornithologist and over 30 nest boxes have been located around the course to encourage birdlife. Five of those breeding are listed on the "Red List" of birds of high conservation concern. All three of Britain's resident woodpeckers have been observed on the course.
  • A practice ground located close to the Clubhouse. Baskets of balls are available from the "Pro" shop.
  • A state-of-the-art, computer controlled, irrigation system designed to keep greens, approaches and tees in excellent condition in dry periods.

Being junior captain of Chroham Hurst golf club I have had the privilege of playing this fantastic golf club on many occasions. Before I initially played the course my expectations were high, and to my delight the course surpassed these. I found the course quite demanding with a great range of differing holes. When playing the course I felt it was a good course, and I then reached the 14th,WOW!! Words fail me to describe such a breathtaking hole with such a daunting drive. This is a hole worthy of any course and fits in well at a great track like Tandridge.

I had the pleasure of playing this wonderful course on Thursday 8th of April when the weather had been dreadful for several days prior. Even without the torrents of rain the condition of the course would have rated very highly, but with all the rain the condition was nothing short of remarkable. Some very scenic holes and a good test of Golf. Excellent finishing holes. Looking forward to the next time.
