It's with tremendous pleasure that I find myself reviewing the golf course which I grew up on as a boy. Between the ages of six and sixteen I spent nearly all of my spare time on this moorland course and it still holds many special memories, for which I'm eternally grateful.
Going back to the mid 1980's, I remember the days of the then club pro Tony Moore (my then county junior coach) and who could ever forget the wonderful and supportive Secretary - Basil Steer.
It was on this course where I broke into single figures aged 14 and remember with immense fondnesss the hole in one I had on the short par three sixth. Measuring around 130 yards I pulled out a six iron and hit it with all my might, losing it in mid air. Amazingly a few seconds later, my partner proclaimed my ace and decided that the Orange squashes were on me. Cheers mate !
On a windy day, this moorland course is a very tough track for any level of player and should provide both a tough test of golf and also some wonderful scenery / wild life. The uphill par four seventh (measuring 420 yards) is probably the hardest hole on the course and when played into the wind will need at least a drive and three wood to be anywhere near the green. But remember don't lose it to the right or you'll end up in deep gorse !
I am now a four handicapper and have quite recently played Tavistock (Winter 98). My overall impression of the course now is, although for me the clubhouse may have lost some of it's charm and perhaps the professionals were not as helpful as they should have been, it's still in great shape and is definitely worth sampling if you're ever in the region. And of course, don't forget to try the wonderful Devon catering, it's a real delight.
Here's looking foward to my next visit.
