You get what you pay for with Temple Newsam - and let's face it, you don't pay much!
Both are actually really testing, interesting courses (I personally prefer the Lady Dorothy course, as it has a touch more variety, and a little less reliance on belting the ball as far as you can) - though you could argue they can be unfair, as you only have to drift into the particularly harsh rough and it's 'new ball' time!
The design of the 2 courses is particularly clever, as they wind across each other over a massive area, and both offer some great holes. Stand-out holes for me on the Lady Dorothy (bottom) course are the par 4s - 5th, 9th, 14th (which is a fantastic hole, that would be raved about were it on a private course and in slightly better nick), along with the 18th, which is a real tester from an elevated green. The Lord Irwin (top) course has some great holes too - the 9th and par 3 11th standing out.
As ever with municipal courses, they get hammered by beginners and duffers - but if you're there to enjoy a game and not fret about the lack of flags, the odd tyre mark on a green (the local kids clearly enjoy the hills and slopes for entirely different reasons!), and the fact that you might occasionally get stuck behind a bunch of lads dribbling the ball 20 yards in front of them, you'll enjoy it.
