There have been golf holes laid out at Upavon since the first world war as a recreational facility for members of the RAF stationed at the Upavon Airfield. By the time that the RAF vacated the site in 1993 an established layout of 10 holes and 18 tees had been played for a number of years.

The departure of the RAF from Upavon saw significant changes. The club gained a new identity as a civilian members club, acquired some additional land and expanded to a full 18 hole layout; the course measuring 6402 yards with a par of 71 and a standard scratch the same. Being built on free-draining chalk, the proud boast is that trolley bans do not exist. The design of the new course was finalised after extensive consultation with environmental and archeological agencies. The result ensures that nature and golf coexist amicably at Upavon, which is a natural habitat for several species of wild orchids and is also home to skylarks and barn owls. add to this the spectacular views over the Vale of Pewsey, and you have a superb downland location offering a true test of golf to all standards of player.

Upavon have opened a great new website which gives all the latest club information www.upavongolfclub.co.uk. Also there is a dedicated phone line, 08712 300 800 which gives accurate up-to-date weather and course conditions. Phone this early in the morning to find out if the course is open, particularly useful in the winter

Having played at Upavon many times, I only have words of praise for the club pro - >Richard Blake and his witty assistants, the younger Richard Mortimer.
The greens-staff and the bar staff. They all do a brilliant job and make the game as fun and entertaining, as it should be.
The course, as per usual, was in brilliant condition and played tough. It is one of the few Wiltshire courses that are different from day to day and impossible to predict.
I look forward to many rounds in the summer and the challenge of the new first green! If you are looking to test your game, look no further than Upavon.
Handicap: At Upavon 12, anywhere else, 9-10

Having played at Upavon this week, I can only compliment the state of the course and it's challenge.
The greens were Augusta-fast (!) - and I failed miserably on them - but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable round. There is a good mix of par 3,4 and 5 holes (including one 600 yard par 5!!), with a variation of challenge in all of them.
A friendly club, and well worth a visit!
