Whitley Bay Golf Club was first formed in 1890 as a winter Club only ! Golf at that early date was not the popular game it is today and during the summer months the original nine-hole course on the shore was given over to holidaymakers (mostly Scots need I add). In 1910 the nine holes were extended to the full 18 holes that the course is today by taking in new ground on the adjoining farm of Briardene. An additional attraction of the reconstructed course is that it gives frequent views of the sea, with the lighthouse on St Mary's Island as a prominent feature.

In 1977 Whitley Bay Golf Club hosted the Callers Tournament which was eventually won by the South African John Fourie, who set the course record of 66 in doing so. During the event stewards urged a young Spaniard called Sevriano Ballesteros to drive off at the par 4 seventh hole before the green had cleared, telling him he would not reach it. Ballesteros was doubtful, the stewards were proved wrong.

Catering facilities include a well stocked bar and snack bar; dinner on request. Standard dress code applies on the course and in the club house. Ample practice facilities include putting green, chipping green and fairway.

Directions
The course is situated about 1 mile north from the centre of Whitley Bay, a quarter of a mile from the North Sea and about 10 miles north east of Newcastle upon Tyne.

I must say that driving through the housing estate to get to the course I thought we'd booked a "wrong-un". But how wrong was I ! A very friendly welcome. Ample changing for visitors and a course that provides a good test. The course was well cared for and the natives were very helpful and welcoming. Course almost plays like an inland links. Recommended.

This is a wonderful test of golf usually played in westerly winds which make the Par 5 twelfth and Par 4 sixteenth incredibly difficult. There are two driving holes (5 and 15) where you must be able to carry at least 150 yards from the back tees or its three off the tee! An excellently prepared course with magnificent coastal views and testing fast greens. Great hospitality in the clubhouse at a very reasonable price. I'll be back.
