At 5843 yards and par 69 (ladies 72), the course is not long by comparison these days but it has two good par 5's and five par 3's, none of which are that easy. The combination of parkland and moor land with the threat of deep rough and a few water hazards can make a round challenging enough especially for the player who is driving off line. Originally designed by James Braid, maximum advantage is taken from the varied terrain as the first six holes use trees and greenside bunkers to catch the unwary. Even the wayward golfer is rewarded at the 7th tee where you suddenly realise that the full glory of the Ribble Valley is at your feet with majestic views to Blackpool and the Fylde in the west and Pendle Hill and the three peaks in distant Yorkshire off to the east.
Holes 7 to 14 are played on the top of the hill where the grass is wiry and the rough is thick. At 15 you drop back to the greener and more lush fairways and the 18th passes the clubhouse where your colleagues stand on the balcony, pint in hand, watching your approach shot …. sometimes too closely!
I thoroughly enjoy this course every time I play it, even when the golf leaves a bit to be desired.
