Simultaneously a bizarre, infuriating, demanding and at times very simple golfing experience. Wimbledon Common is not a classic golf course but there is enough here for the serious player to enjoy and for the less skilled player to be rewarded by, but not intimidated.
It is built on the Common, which means that horse tracks and the general public are as much a hazard as the course itself, which boasts not a single bunker. It is at times very easy with a number of short par 4s that play as little more than a drive and a chip let alone a pitch. The strength of the course however lies in a trio of very strong par 4s notably the 2nd, 10th and 13th, allied to three very long +230 yard par 3s which into any kind of breeze are out of range with even a driver.
Strategy is a must - to score well the golfer must play conservatively when the course gets tight but be astute enough to realise when there is an opportunity to open the shoulders with a driver and get close to the green on some of those short par 4s. All in all great fun!!!!
