I get to play Woburn as a guest a few times each year, and I always look forward to playing such a prestigious course. The Duchess is my favourite. It is more about course management and finding the fairways, than big hitting, although there are many occasions where some long par 4's require distance and accuracy. The upkeep of the Duchess course is a credit to the greenkeeper and his staff, and I have seen further improvements in green quality and fairways this year. Regards - Brampton Park, Huntingdon, Cambs.

Home club Tuscawilla, Orlando Florida. Handicap 14.
Played with John Anderson for first time today. Long course, almost holed out on 9th with five iron. Blustery day, made conditions difficult at times. Greens not bad for time of year. Ladies tees non existent (rough fairway). Poor locker-room and no drinks on course. Lovely setting. Didn't quite play to handicap. Nice clubhouse, nice friendly staff. Good catering. Would definitely try it again.

The Dukes Course at Woburn is one of the finest courses in England or Wales. With no need for water hazards this course winds its way through the Pine Forests in the grounds of the Woburn Abbey estate. The length of the course is not the main factor in making this course as difficult as the SSS to par makes it appear. The yardage is under 7000 yds. The prime factor in making this course testing to players of all ability is the claustrophobic nearness of the trees on every tee, making every tee shot one to savour. The driver is a risk around this course, but then at just under 7000yds maybe it's a risk that will be to be taken on in order to reach some par 4's in regulation.
Once the hazards on the tees and fairways are safely negotiated there is another test of your golfing ability with fast undulating greens. No hope for the man who hits his approach shot to the high side of the pin, especially on the short third hole. You do not want a downhill putt here. As for the chip back...What chip back, the green is surrounded by forest, and flowering bushes. Hit the green or risk a big score.
Altogether a fabulous course that should be played by everyone able to make the trip. And if you require another reason to visit this golfing slice of heaven. The lunchtime carvery provided in the daytime 36 hole greenfee is one of the best I have come across having played all over the world.
