I played the Hotchkin course in April 2002 and thought it was stunning. The views were dramatic and the holes were superb, a good mixture of varying difficulty. You can't come away from the place without mentioning the bunkers - although I avoided them, my playing partner did not and he found it tough going getting out of them. Even at the start of the season, it is such a good course to play and although the greens on the Bracken course are apparently of better standard, this course tests your golfing ability, which proves to you what a good course it really is. Your handicap doesn't really count for anything, unless you are a bandit. An enjoyable day for all who visit it.

If you missed the short summer and your local clubs and municipals are suffering then it is worth travelling any distance to play this masterpiece of a course in absolutely superb condition at any time of the year. I played the course at the beginning of October and although we had an excellent break with the weather (it started raining as we came down the 18th): after the two hour drive and seeing the sheer number of golfers teeing off, you could be forgiven for thinking that the course would suffer as a result. You couldn't be further from the truth.
After reading previous reviews about the course, I can't really say that any particular hole stood out more than the rest. Most, if not all, were in fantastic condition and you could forgive the greens staff for the slight irrigation work going on around the greens. If I were to pick a hole to remember then it would be the par three 12th. It will probably be one of the best shortest holes you will play with the green guarded left and right with small pot bunkers and even if you avoid them and miss the postage stamp green, the heather and gorse will swallow your ball all to easily.
There are many inviting tee shots, but with the funnel like fairways the longer the shot the more accurate you have to be. Staying on the short stuff as a must. If you have played links or moor land golf then you will know the penalty missing the fairways. For most people it will be the first time you will have seen bunkers with steps to help you get down the bottom! Don't go there!
In essence, enjoy the round however you play and just wish like me that the course was on your doorstep and not four counties away!

I and three friends played both the Hotchkin and the Bracken courses at the beginning of June 99. We are all fairly high handicappers but it was a fantastic day out. The Hotchkin was quite simply like nothing we have ever played, bunkers the size of your house and just as deep, and well protected entrances to the greens meant you had to be on top form to get a decent score. The main thing was the condition of the course - superb, and so quiet and peaceful. The Bracken course is more open but still a stern test with water replacing the bunkers as the major hazard.
As the headquarters of the English Golf Union we had expected a certain stuffiness but nothing could be further from the truth. Friendly and helpful staff, reasonably priced food and excellent facilities resulted in a memorable day out and got us quickly planning our return. Brilliant!

I played the Hotchkin course recently (19/3/99) and I was astounded at the excellent condition of the course. Although a flat course, it is a fantastic experience as the bunkers and heather take no prisoners.
Go to enjoy the experience and don't worry too much about your score and you will have a great day.
The staff are helpful and courteous and the practice facilities are second to none.
