I was privileged enough to play in the recent British Amputee Golf Association Open at Strandhill and found the course to be one of the most interesting and challenging I've played.
The clubhouse and it's staff were marvellous, the food is plentiful and reasonably priced. The staff are all very courteous and the members welcoming. The views are mountainous with Knocknarea in one direction and
the Atlantic in the other. There was horseracing on the beach and not a drop of rain over the five days of play.
The course needs a practice round or some local knowledge to make the best of your game, although the pro shop sells the most comprehensive course guide I've seen.
The fifth fairway is interesting, it has many humps and bumps and even if you play your ball down the middle, you won't see it again until you walk up to it. The 14th has a nickname (ask a local), as it is unique, the green is protected by very large mounds (the grass on which act as 'nets') with about 20 feet between. The 18th is a par 4 but uphill into the wind plays as long as any par 5. Everyone should play this course once.

I played this course and fell in love with it. The back 9, particularly, is unique, hard and interesting. I hope to play it again....many times.

I was delighted to find Strandhill on the internet and must proudly say that is where I learned to play golf and I think it is a fabulous course. Am going on holiday and expect to be in Strandhill in June and hope I can have a game or two. 3 years ago I played with Jerry Carr and some other of the locals. I was born and reared in Strandhill a long time ago . I wonder if there is any information available as to when the open week is on, as I would make that a must for my itinerary. Look forward to catching up with you all.
Best wishes... Seamus McMahon
