| Westport course was designed by Fred Hawtree. Slowly it dawns on the visitor that, although beside the sea, this is not a links course. It's almost pure parkland, on 250 mature acres, with a well-balanced combination of holes and a truly majestic backdrop of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay. The Westport course is a parkland course designed by Hawtree and Son. Its an accommodating course for the average player, but provides a feisty challenge for the more accomplished golfer. In this course of two distinct halves, the opening nine is relatively straightforward but long back nine calls for character. The 580 yard, par 5, 15th is a truly out standing hole which demands a drive clear over an inlet of Clew Bay. Not for the faint hearted. Westport Golf Club is recognise as a prestigious venue and has hosted both the ladies Home international in 1989 and the Irish Amateur Close Championship on three occasions, most frequently in 1997. A group of us played Westport this July. To be honest I was slightly disappointed initially, as I thought the first few holes were a bit dull and there was some rebuilding work going on, but I enjoyed the back nine much more. As everyone else has said, the 15th is the stand-out hole, I really wanted to play it again after messing it up the first time, but the long downhill par 3 towards the sea and the stroke 1 hole (dogleg par 4, can't remember what number) were also great. The clubhouse facilities are fine.
