I played Appleby in early December following torrential rains and howling gales. The fact that the course was open was a miracle - the fact we on very good summer greens was a real bonus. A lovely moorland course over turf moors and right among the hill farms with interesting holes and, yet, pretty easy on the legs. I doubt if there are many courses quite like Appleby. It was a pleasure to play and pretty good value. There were no par fives but some great individual holes. The big hitters could definitely reach several of the par fours which makes it good fun trying. In the clubhouse, I met some very friendly members who made me feel very welcome. Don't play the greenkeeper for money - he plays off scratch, holds the course record and recently won the grouse finals at St Andrews !
