As a 20 handicapper, The Downshire provides plenty of challenges for me. The Downshire is a low-lying parkland course which is well used (47,000 tee-offs last year) by a loyal following of mainly local golfers.
Can get boggy in winter, but the dedicated greenkeepers do a good job keeping the course very playable.
The par 3 third is often challenging, with a mature tree to the right of the green often affecting your shot.
Ditches, water and blind shots can all play a part in a round here. For me the back nine is harder.
    Excellent facilities too...

A very good course, plenty of hazards and an enjoyable clubhouse.

This is the course that I grew up playing. Please bear in mind that I have not played Downshire in over two years but feel qualified enough to provide a sound review.
Firstly, the course has very good facilities. Along with a spacious, long driving range it has an excellent pro shop and a very good 19th hole.
The course itself is very good, particularly now that the rough has been cut and is no longer impossible to get out of. There is very good use of water. The par 3 lake hole can result in anything from a birdie to a 14 ( I know as I have done it.). The course is a good length and almost every hole offers something interesting to negotiate.
The greens are in good condition and quite large. One complaint would be that too many holes are left to right with only one hole favouring a draw and do bear in mind that this is probably one of the busiest courses I have ever played. Rounds under 4 hours are nigh on impossible.

i think you will find there is 4 holes where you need to go right to left at downshire, 1st straight,2nd fade,3rd straight,4th draw(if your a big hitter), 5th fade, 6th fade,7th straight, 8th slight draw, 9th dead straight, 10th fade, 11th draw, 12th big fade(or big boom over tree), 13th fade, 14th straight, 15th fade(if your taking the corner on), 16 straight, 17th straight, 18th straight...and if you can play all them holes like that...well hello tiger!!!

This is a highly popular, and well used public course, with a nice new clubhouse, pro shop and driving range. The course is now 26 years old, with the parkland setting maturing every year. The old days of 2ft high rough have now been replaced with avenues of fir and silver birch to provide the hazards. There is also a fairly judicious use of water and two or three recently constructed tee boxes that makes the course a real challenge of the back tees.
