Course Details

Course Name: Vertish Hill Holes: 18 Yardage: 5993 SSS: 69
Winding hillside course with most holes providing spectacular views of the Border Hills. A number of long par 4's and tricky bunkered par 3's make it a good test of golf. A tough start with the first and second holes alongside a road (out of bounds) means that accuracy is vital.

We are small golf society of 20 odd years and have been visiting the Borders since 1992. We always play Hawick and it is a tremendous course with variety and differing length holes. A very physical test with difficult sloping fairways. A general incline to a summit and then a rapid descent over four holes, it is a real natural course worth playing. Firstly, hire a buggy then enjoy a really well laid out gem .
Steep start but then levels out to provide a good challenge for all.
    Great views,very friendly staff.
    Playing again in 2005.
    Highly recommend.

I'm now into my 25th year as a member of this fine golf course. Hole 1 is a very difficult par 3 with out of bounds on the right. All my years I've found this hole a very difficult starting hole for a number of reasons one the road plays Havock with your mind its tight up against the length of this hole and is always on your mind. Even if you try to ignore it ,it has a habit of interrupting your mind in competition its a tough start one false move and you've wrecked your score at the start.

Hawick is a physical and tactical test. If you stray off line you will be in trouble very quickly, the aim being to keep the ball in play, big hitters off beam will not score well! Although not a very lengthy course there are still some testing par four and par three's. The course rises for the first six holes with a road on a couple of holes to restrict a slice and wooded areas to stop the hook. It then levels out a little and these middle holes are less restrictive, with an interesting short Par 4 12th. It is only around 300 yards in but has a well protected banked green which often results in the player over-shooting. Not many holes are downhill with the exception of the 15th, 16th and 18th which all drop sharply. The 16th Par four can be driven, but you can quite easily end up in a mess if you slice or hook the ball. A nice ending is the Par three 18th, downhill, quite lengthy on to a shared 18th green. It is a course well worth playing.
